November 21, 2017 - Taguig City

President Duterte delivered a keynote address before Philippine city mayors last November 21, 2017 at Shangri-La at the Fort in Taguig City during the Joint 63rd National Executive Board Meeting and 65th General Assembly of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP).

Local Governance

In his speech at the annual gathering of local chief executives, the President tackled the key issues of his administration that are critical to cities. These include local development and anti-corruption efforts in local governments.

Duterte also reiterated his unwavering position against illegal drugs. Coming from his experience as a former mayor of Davao City and witnessing the destructive nature of narcotics in society, he reminded the mayors of his election platform of ridding the country of drugs and criminality.

“I was carrying three messages. […] I'll stop graft and corruption, drugs, and improve the economy by improving the law and order,” he said.

A total of 87 city mayors across the country attended the event. LCP Chairperson and Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano formally welcomed her colleagues by highlighting the role of cities in maximizing trade and business opportunities made in the recently concluded ASEAN Summit.

LCP 2017 Special Report

For his part, LCP President and Angeles City Mayor Ed Pamintuan reported before the President and the mayors the accomplishments of the League from July 2016 to July 2017. He also expressed the League’s support for the 10-point economic agenda of the Duterte Administration moving forward.

“We see the LCP in the coming years to be more actively engaged in the realization of President Duterte’s reform program, and in contributing to the implementation of his 10-point economic agenda. Even if expressed in general terms and formulation, we see our involvement in each of all the 10 points laid down as the anchor of the Duterte presidency. We will be there, every step of the way,” he said.
